Computers - desktop - what to ask before you buy

5. How much RAM do I need in a desktop computer?

Don't get less than 2GB of RAM, which is 'Random Access Memory' and it's the short term memory that helps the processor when it's running. More RAM means the processor can work more efficiently. The more you spend on your computer, the more you should spend on RAM - rough guide 2GB of RAM for every $1,000 you spend on the computer.

If you're running Windows Vista, try for 3GB RAM.

Find out if all the RAM slots are already filled up with the memory that comes with the computer, or are there free slots for future upgrades - just so you know if you can upgrade later or not.
