Compact digital cameras - what to ask before you buy
8. What other features might I get with a compact digital camera?
- Face recognition - this is where the camera automatically detects faces in a scene then selects the ideal camera settings to suit.
- Image stabilisation - helps reduce camera shake for zoom or low light photos.
- Water resistant/waterproof - handy for holidays and snaps by the sea or in the snow
- Automatic white balance - most of the time this will automatically make allowances for the kind of light in the photo (fluorescent, natural daylight, incandescent etc.) but some cameras allow you to over ride it.
- ISO speed selection - this enables you to adjust the 'speed' of your camera to better suit fast moving objects or low light conditions.
- Movie mode - this takes up more room on your memory card, but it's great fun. Some software will allow you to save single photos from the movie and print them out.
- Direct printing - allows you to plug your camera directly into a printer via USB cable and print your photos without connnecting to a computer.
