Televisions - flat screen - what to ask before you buy
4. How good is the picture on a flat screen tv?
LCD tvs tend to have a high level of brightness but lower contrast ratios (meaning that black is sometimes less than black), although this is being addressed in recent models. Plasma tvs have high contrast and brightness.
When buying a flat screen tv, you could take a dvd of your own to view on the tv you're considering, to check on the blacks and overall contrast. It is likely that the material played in the shop will be purpose made to make the tv look as good as it can.
One thing to check is skin tones - if these look odd, check that adjustments can be made to normalise them.
